Bishop named on Queen's Birthday Honours list

Retired bishop Ron Stone is among dozens of Anglicans named in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The former bishop of Rockhampton and assistant bishop in Tasmania, Ron Stone is currently serving as Vicar-General in the Diocese of Bendigo while Bishop Andrew Curnow is away on 'Lambeth' leave.

The former Chancellor of two WA dioceses, Perth and North West Australia, Justice Ken Parker has received one of the nation's top awards.

Justice Parker became a Companion of the Order of Australia for his service to the WA Anglican Church and for his work as Vice-President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

One of Australia's leading businessmen, Roger Corbett also received at AO award for his service to the retiling industry.

The national chair of Anglicare Australia, the Revd Canon Ray Cleary has become a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for his service to the Anglican Church through social justice and welfare organisations.

Mr Michael Cockram from Como, WA was also awarded an AM for service through the Prison Fellowship Western Australia and as a supporter of restorative justice programs.

 

Among Anglicans receiving an Order of Australia award were:

The Reverend Michael Cockayne, Queanbeyan NSW

For service to the community of Queanbeyan, particularly through social welfare programs. He provided housing to homeless men, since 1980s, through work in Queanbeyan for the Christ Church Queanbeyan.

 

Mrs Beverley Cook, Ensay VIC

For service to the community of Gippsland East through a range of educational, health, sporting and church organisations, and to music.Current Lay Reader, Omeo Parish, Diocese of Gippsland

 

Mr Hilton Davis, Blayney NSW

For service to the community of Blayney, particularly through retirement and aged care organisations. Chair, Management Committee, Christ Church Retirement Village, since 2004.

 

Mr John Fry, Cheltenham NSW

For service to the community through church organisations and social justice initiatives to assist prisoners and detainees. As an Anglican Church member, was a Member of the Coalition for the Protection of Asylum Seekers.

 

Mrs Dulcie Giles, Newcastle NSW

For service to the community of Newcastle through ex-service organisations. Parishioner of Christchurch Anglican Cathedral.

 

Mr Tressler 'Mick' Harvey, Orange NSW

For service to the conservation of native flora, to education and to the community.

Founding Member, Advisory Committee for Design and Construction of Orange Botanic Gardens. Parishioner of Holy Trinity, Orange.

 

Mr Max Hutchinson, Burnie Tas

For service to the community of Burnie through social welfare, agricultural, service and business organisations. Member, Tasmania's Diocesan Council

 

Mrs Mary Johnston, Dapto NSW

For service to the community of the Illawarra, particularly through the William Beach Day Club. Current Member, Parish Council of Anglican church in Dapto.

 

Mr Errol Jorgensen, Toowoomba Qld

For service to veterans through the preservation of military history and support of ex-service organisations, and to the community of Toowoomba. Member, St James' Anglican Church, for over 20 years,

 

The Reverend Barry May, Embleton WA

For service to the community, particularly through chaplaincy roles with the Western Australia Police Service and veterans' organisations. Senior Police Chaplain, Western Australian Police

 

Mr Gordon Millar, Longford Tas

For service to the community of the Longford area through a range of roles with sporting, civic, church and local government organisations. Parish Councillor, Longford/Perth Anglican Parish, for over 45 years.

 

The Reverend Canon Brian Newing, Bunbury WA

For service to the Anglican Church in Western Australia, and to the community of Bunbury through roles with a range of aged care, educational and social welfare organisations. Former Dean of  St Boniface Cathedral, Bunbury,

 

Mr Max Pringle, Narrabri NSW

For service to the community of Narrabri through a range of agricultural, aged care, historical and social welfare organisations. Member, Narrabri West Congregation, Anglican Parish of Narrabri.

The Reverend Dr Ray Williamson, Wollstonecraft NSW

For service to to the promotion of ecumenism and to community welfare, particularly through collaborative projects with the government to establish affordable housing. General Secretary, New South Wales Ecumenical Council, 1986-2007.
